Only 3 Months Out!

Salam Travelers!  (Hello Travelers)

Our journey to Egypt is getting near. From now until departure for Cairo, I will be sharing much supplementary information about our destination. I hope that you can take some time to explore the suggested links, books and movies about Egypt. Your experiences on the trip will be immensely enhanced if you arrive at the airport armed with a headful of art and history, music and myth.

Please look at previous posts on this blog for reading and viewing suggestions.

One of our lovely travelers, Jennifer Randle, surprised me with a new copy of the DK Eyewitness Ancient Egypt (DK Eyewitness Books)Travel for Egypt. I have been devouring it and enjoying the many maps and photographs. This is a great choice for a compact guide to Egypt.

Within this guide, I was reminded of the great contemporary Egyptian writer Naguib Mahfouz, winner of the 1988 Nobel Prize for Literature.  His Cairo Triology, Bayn al Qasrayn, Qasr al Shawq, Sukkariya (Between-the-Palaces, Palace of Longing, Sugarhouse) in 1957 made him famous throughout the world as a depictor of traditional Arab urban life. At over 1500 pages, this series follows a family through three generations during a time of major societal change. (from WWI through the 1950's) You can learn more about Naguid Mahfouz and find a list of his books here.

Ma’a salama! (Goodbye)
